Let's Shine Some Light on "Low Light Plants"

One of the most common requests I get is for low-light plants—but here’s the thing: there’s no such thing as a plant that requires low light, only plants that tolerate it.

If you have a dim corner that could use some greenery, here are a few of my favorite low-light tolerant plants:

Snake Plant – Many cool varieties to choose from! This is a Fernwood snake plant. Water when soil is DRY DRY, which might be just every month or two.

ZZ Plant – Another upright option with very glossy dark green leaves. Similar in care to the snake plant, water when soil is DRY DRY.

Pothos – This trailing beauty prefers watering when the top couple of inches of soil dry out, but will forgive a forgotten watering. Many varieties are available, but typically the darker green the leaves are, the more low-light tolerant it will be.

These plants won’t thrive in darkness (really, no plant will), but they’re resilient and will do just fine in spaces with minimal natural light. Give them more-than-low light and they'll be even happier!

Another tip for your plants in low light areas: the lower the light, the less your plants are actively growing, therefore the less water they need. So a plant in a low light area will require less frequent watering than the same plant in a higher light area.

Community Spotlight

AVONDALE GARDENING ALLIANCE

The Avondale Gardening Alliance (AGA) isn't your grandma's garden club! It’s a kinda quirky, community-driven group of neighbors hosting annual events like a seed swap, 🌱 seedling swap, urban agriculture fair, and houseplant swap (with BINGO!). Ongoing gatherings include a book club, meetups at the Mindful Living Garden, and more. Want to stay in the loop? If you're on Facebook, join the Avondale Gardeners Group.

🍅 From their website:
"We are a network of neighbors promoting urban agriculture. The mission of the Avondale Gardening Alliance is to mobilize neighbors to maximize the benefits of urban agriculture. We strive to create a safer and healthier Avondale, where people share their skills and resources to create a network of support for sustainable gardening practices."

This year, the AGA created its first ever almanac, full of references to science, art, tradition, folklore, and ritual that have been curated to bring you closer to nature, your neighbors, and the magic that is earth science. You can pick up a copy at Rooted Living for $25, payable directly to the AGA.
