If you've been in the shop this winter, you probably noticed (or even fed sunflower seeds to) Magnolia. Why is Magnolia living in the shop?
Magnolia normally lives outside behind the shop with two other hens. Magnolia moved into the shop in late November after she wounded her back so she could safely heal away from the other chickens. You see, while chickens can be very sweet, they can also be very mean if they see an injured chicken. So for her safety, we brought her into the shop. In addition to her wound, she has some mobility issues and cannot get herself up into the coop at night, so she had been sleeping on the ground before her injury. With how cold it has been, it just doesn't seem right to put her back outside just yet.
We aren't sure yet if Magnolia will go back to being an outside chicken. I tried reintroducing her to the other gals and they were very confrontational. We'll be weighing whether her life will be better inside or whether it's worth going through the difficult reintroduction process. So for now, enjoy Magnolia in the shop and if you'd like to feed her mealworms or sunflowers seeds, just ask me!
